Just Humit

IMG_9797.JPG.jpg

An album sometime evolves from studio experiences captured on tape.

This album is a capturing of my voice, but... without words.

In some cases I happened to be playing piano and started humming a tune and then added additional vocals later,  in some cases I created a tribal drum track or other vibe and vocalized over it, some times I just hummed with nothing else playing, and in one case I was meditating on OM and it turned into an entire song.  This album is a collection of that.   11 songs that were based on a feeling, a vibe that I can't ever duplicate.  Everything is "one take" and completely in the moment.   I drift onto a sonic page and paint it.  and thought to share it with you.

Coming soon!

Glimpse Into It

I have been doing some pretty cool projects worth mentioning.   Recently a great album came out that I wrote and recorded the piano and the synth string parts on a few songs.  Not only is the album excellent, but it was so much fun to create the parts on these amazing songs.

I am also working on backing vocals for a new country rock artist. 6 songs, all vocal arrangements, harmonies, and singing the parts too.    I think this might be my favorite thing to do.  Layering the vocals and texturing the tracks with harmonies is just a timeless passing of hours for me.   Working on a commercial for a network placement of my own, and finishing up the album  100 Thousand miles too!

More on the album later... for now check out

I Will Never Work a Day in My Life

285dcb8f2a29415c897f9074281270f1.jpg

I am a terrible typist. I make a lot of mistakes and spend more time fixing than I do typing.  I am not good at figuring numbers out in my head either. Random fact...useless information.. :)

Anyway Ill try and keep this Blog going, and answer some questions I get from my friends, family, and people I meet along the way.

The question I get asked the most is

"What do you do for a job"?

I don't really consider to have a job. Hard to explain, but I feel I have a way of life, a focus, a passion, a drive, a spirit to create, that has moved me successfully through because I don't have a choice, but to honor it or die...    I think I would have a medical emergency if I had to do something other than music. This life is far too embedded in my blood to change course, ever.

I never thought of it as a job and always just considered it "Who" I am.  I had other interests in life, but nothing ever held me like singing, writing music, and performing. It has been an amazing journey so far to have done just about a little of everything in the music industry from having a recording contract, touring, managing an amazing band, running a music production company, and being a creative artist and writer performing an average of at least 100 shows a year for as long as I can remember.

I do very much enjoy the diversity of my life and getting to create a tapestry of sound, a sound track of my life,

Is my life.

They said do what you love, be who you are, LOVE WHAT YOU DO AND YOU WILL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE.

I just want to bang on my drum all day...    like Todd ;  )

Open Mics in New Jersey

t wasnt until 2011 that I went to my first Open Mic at a place in Ocean Grove NJ called The Barbaric Bean Sponsored by Cook Smith and Carol Barbieri,  I didnt know what to expect other than an opportunity to play my piano and guitar in front of people who I didnt know and who werent paying me, so it was a no pressure deal.  I found more than a chance to do that, I met friends and like minded people who all do what I do, and understand the love and passion I have for making music.    The local music community is filled with amazing talented people who love music so much that after gigging 100 gigs a year they still go out to the open mics and try out new songs and continue develping their craft.  What a gift to have the stage to try new things, test out new songs, meet new people.  I had no confidence to play an instrument and sing at the same time until I went to an open mic.  There are many reasons to go to one as a musician and as a listener. A great night out for anyone.      Questions  Ask    Aprilkellymusic@gmail.com

Run or Stay

Minding my own business and then suddenly running down the stairs and through the house to find my phone to quickly record the idea that is coming to my head...you have a very quick decision to make as a songwriter. Take the idea thats coming to you or forever let it blow away in a distant memory and live the rest of your life wondering if it was a hit.... I cant...or I wont sleep.. sleep is important..from what people tell me....I should start doing that... sleep thing.... but... music... and   I   Waaah    I dont want to go to sleep     thats boring.

What I Use to Record

Pretty nifty that in 2015 we have so much digital equipment to select from.  I went from cakewalk to Boss 1600 and Yamaha MD8 to Mac, and then to ProTools 10 (with too many to mention in between).    One my favorite and most important pieces of gear is my beloved Avalon Design 737 Vacuum Tube Pre Amp.  It gets the vocals kicking and sounding fresh and clean.   To me its my secret (not anymore) ingredient.   I have a Roland RD-300 SX weighted keyboard and a few guitars, a bass, and a cajon.  The only thing I need is a sink and a toaster oven and I might never need to leave.    I will post the plug ins at another time..
